1. Engagement and wedding rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it was once thought that a vein in that finger led directly to the heart. Although in some European countries ( German, Russia) brides wear their wedding rings on their right hand.

2. A pearl engagement ring is said to be bad luck because its shape is similar to that of a teardrop.

3. One of history’s earliest engagement rings was given to Princess Mary, daughter of Henry VIII. She was two years old at the time.

4. 61% of men consult with their girlfriend before buying the ring.

6. When it came to picking an engagement ring, 56% of brides say their biggest priority was shape – (26% that said cut of the diamond, 13% that said size diamond, and 5% that said color).


7.The most frequently selected style of engagement ring is a round cut brilliant diamond ring, closely followed by a princess cut. While white gold and platinum are the most popular metals used. Keep in mind, these tend to be trends and go through cycles throughout time.

8. December is the most popular month for buying engagement rings, with approximately 15% of couples getting engaged during the festive season. Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving and New Years are also popular days for proposals.

9. Hotel heiress Paris Hilton was given one of the world’s most expensive engagement rings. It was worth an estimated $4.7 million. The centerpiece of the ring was an enormous 24-carat, canary yellow, emerald cut diamond.

10. A few other celebrities with colored stones in their wedding rings: Olivia Wilde, Halle Berry, Jessica Simpson, Kate Middleton, Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood, and Elizabeth Hurley.

The way in which it is worn, whether it is worn on the right or left hand, and which direction it faces, lets people know whether it is an engagement ring or wedding band.
