Building Your Photography Lists for Amazing Photos

Why is having a plan for your wedding pictures so important? You are investing money into your wedding photos, so why not invest the time and effort into creating a plan so you get exactly what you want? How do you get the best pictures while still respecting and honoring your guests? It all starts with a wedding photography plan!

Bride (1 hour)

Budget an hour for your photographer to capture photos of the bride. Have the photographer come when you are about half-way through hair and makeup so they can capture the end of this time. This is perfect for catching the range of emotions, from the excitement and nervousness to the laughter, fun and tears. Showcase any special details or gifts that you will be wearing on your wedding day, such as hair pieces or jewelry. Develop a list of specific pictures that you want taken with your mother, grandmothers, soon-to-be mother-in-law and other important people as you work with your photographer.

Groom (30 minutes)

Taking photos of the groom and groomsmen is usually a light-hearted, fun filled time. Developing a list of photos will help this time to be spent wisely. Be sure and use any special or interesting areas of the wedding venue to your advantage.

The ceremony is one of the crown jewels of the day and full of photo opportunities. The first look as you come down the aisle, the first kiss, the hand-off between the father and groom and any unexpected moments are fun to relive through the photos. Talk that through the key moments with the photographer and give them a detailed ceremony schedule so they know what to expect.

Post Ceremony with Bridal Party (45 minutes)

The hard part is done, the planning and ceremony is behind you, regardless of any unexpected moments! Enjoy this time with your friends and family and SMILE! These are precious pictures and often the most joyful of the day! Share your ideas of backgrounds and poses with your photographer ahead of time because you probably won’t remember every single idea as you are caught up in the excitement of being a new bride.

Alter / Family Pictures (40 minutes)

These are generally the more traditional, family pictures that include swapping in different branches of the new family tree. Having your plan ready with your photographer will allow them to direct people but also make sure everyone needed is present.

Romantics (1 hour)

Romantic photos with your new spouse is a welcomed breath of air for many brides, especially if you plan on getting photos taken outside. Photos outside of your venue or at a local park with natural settings are fun and also offer gardens, benches to sit on and bridges to walk over. You can use props, such as an umbrella or Mr. and Mrs. sign. There are many creative ideas, but remember that you have planned a certain amount of time between the ceremony and reception, so it’s a good idea to choose one location that’s close by and have a plan for the types of photos you want to include your time is used efficiently. Working together with your photographer will ensure that you have best possible pictures and that you are pleased with the outcome and overall experience.

There are so many opportunities for your photographer to capture the different key moments during your wedding reception, such as the entrance, toast from the best man and maid or matron of honor, cake cutting and special dances. Give your photographer a general schedule of the wedding reception and to connect them with your DJ so they can work together on timing and capturing all the planned moments.
