Unification Rituals

While a wedding day is a celebration of your union, there are some unification rituals you may want to use as part of your ceremony.

Unity candle. The unity candle ceremony has been, well, the symbol of unity for some time. Most often, the candles are lit by the mothers of the bride and groom prior to the ceremony. During the wedding, the bride and groom will use their individual candles to light one larger candle, representing their beginning as a couple. Many couples continue to light their unity candle on their anniversary each year.

Flower exchange. During the ceremony, the bride and groom exchange the flower of their choice at the altar. These flowers are their first gift to each other.

Sand mixing. The bride and groom each take their respective vial of sand and blend them into one container, representing the joining of their lives. If either has children, this is a great way to involve them to represent the blending of their families. This is also a great alternative to unity candles if you are having an outdoor ceremony, where the wind makes candle lighting a challenge.

Knot ceremony. As the bride and groom hold each other’s hands, a rope, cord or fabric is tied into a knot to symbolize their eternal bond.

Hand ceremony. As the bride and groom hold hands, each one states what the future holds for them. During this ceremony, Blessing of the HandsĀ is often read by the couple or honored guest.
