So You're Engaged... What's Next?

Congratulations on your engagement! There are few times in life that are more fun, busy and exciting than this season. To keep things moving in the right direction and to ensure that you enjoy the process, focus on a few key things first.

What Do I Do After I Get Engaged?

Below is a sample to-do list for the first few months of your engagement. Coming back to this list will help keep you on track and enjoying the planning process:

  • Set up engagement pictures

    • If you want engagement pictures taken, do it early on. That way, can use those images on your “save the date” cards, should you choose.

  • Set a budget

    • Establish priorities and a bottom line. A budget will allow you to realize what your priorities, where you can possibly do some DIY projects, and where you may want to scale back, if needed.

  • Consider hiring a wedding planner

    • If this is something you want to do and have the budget to do, begin doing research, getting recommendations and meeting with potential planners. Wedding planners can be a HUGE asset! They help during the wedding planning and vital on the wedding day (and rehearsal)! Their expertise, experience and wisdom can help keep things running smoothly and ensure the best possible outcome

  • Set a wedding date

    • The wedding date needs to be decided before much of the other planning (such as wedding venue, photographer, caterer, etc.) can take place. The sooner this is nailed down, the better! Be sure and invite the family in on this conversation if it is appropriate and won’t be too stressful.

  • Decide on a rough number of guests and gather contact information

    • This is important as you begin to think about where you would like to have the ceremony and reception. This will help you to eliminate some locations (or pair down your guest list) as needed. As you finalize your list, be sure to get current addresses to make sending out wedding invitations easier.

  • Choose your wedding party

    • Have some fun as you ask friends and family to be a part of your wedding party. It can be as big of a deal or as low-key as you want, but you do want to be sure to ask them early in the planning. There are benefits and drawbacks to both bigger and smaller sized wedding parties so be sure and figure out what is best for you and your fiance.

  • Decide on and reserve venues

    • With your date chosen and rough guest list compiled, now is the time to reserve your wedding venue.

  • Start wedding dress shopping

    • Depending on the dress, it can take up to 9 months for it to arrive and be altered before your big day. Go shopping with an open mind and a good entourage who will be honest and supportive.

  • Book videographer, photographer & DJ

    • Great videographers, photographers and DJs book up quickly, not just for the current wedding season, but even the next! Once your date and venue are set, find a vendor who is willing to bring your vision to life! You want make sure they have experience and are competent and professional.

We happen to know a few remarkable DJs, Photographers, and Videographers…

These are a few things to help you get started as you begin planning. Hopefully, you can enjoy the process!
